LETTER FROM THE HEART
We all have what seems like little time. More often, we go about our daily lives in a rush with very little time left to nurture friendships and relationships. However, it is important to me that I reach out and touch the people who crossed my path and made a difference in my life.
I had an opportunity to visit Hershey, PA and stayed at the Hotel Hershey with my family. While visiting Hotel Hershey, I discovered that Hershey, Pennsylvania was more than just another tourist city, more than going to an amusement park and not just about the Hershey chocolate conglomerate. I discovered that Milton Hershey not only built a chocolate empire, he was a man of integrity and substance. He built the town of Hershey for the people who worked in his factory to create a solid community. I always thought as a young girl that Hershey, PA was all about the amusement park. But the Hershey Amusement Park was built so that the workers and their families within the community could have a recreational outlet which also, attracted tourists. Tourism helped to sustain the town.
In addition to homes, Mr. Hershey built a school for underprivileged orphan children (he had some misfortunes in his early childhood). He built a bank, a church, and just about everything a community would need to serve its residents. This man could have easily made millions and kept all the money for himself. But he didn't, and his legacy continues to grow and to be nourished. You can experience it when you visit the town.
I chose to talk about Mr. Hershey because while we are busy building our own kingdoms, we need to extend a hand to our own community. We need to share our success with others. When we do, our legacy will continue to grow and help sustain our community.
Have a Sweet Day!
Sincerely,
Joyce Dawkins
